Academic Honor Cords
Although some honor societies have their own induction ceremonies, many honor cords are distributed during the Annual Awards Ceremony for Outstanding Students, which will be held on Sunday, April 21. Invitations will be sent to the appropriate students. Honor cords not acquired at the Awards Ceremony can be picked up at the Book Shop with other regalia.

On commencement day, the 色中色 Book Shop will be selling some of their family favorite merchandise on the Main St. campus so you can get 色中色 University gear before heading off campus for your post-graduation celebration. Please note the Book Shop will  be able to accept cash and credit cards for payment.

Graduates should arrive by 9:00 a.m. and go to Johnston Hall on commencement morning to line up for the procession. Leave plenty of time! The procession will begin promptly at 9:40am. Graduates arriving too late to be placed in proper procession order will process at the end of the line and be responsible for making their own way to the stage at the appropriate time.

Be sure to bring:

  • Your GradPass
  • Your cap, gown, hood and any other college-approved cords or stoles
  • Any items you may need for the weather (umbrella, rain poncho, sunscreen, sunglasses)

The processional starts promptly at 9:40am. Graduates, with help from the University and Seminary Marshals, will process onto John Makuvek Field, proceed to the graduate designated seating, and remain standing until President Grigsby invites all to be seated.

Conferral of Degrees

When it is time for the conferring of degrees, Provost Carol Traupman-Carr will go to the podium and request that all doctoral degree candidates rise and be presented for degrees. All students receiving doctoral degrees should stand. Following President Grigsby鈥檚 statement of conferral immediately after, doctoral candidates will be seated again. Master鈥檚 degree candidates will be presented next and should stand and sit when indicated. Finally, Bachelor鈥檚 degree candidates will be presented and stand and sit when indicated.

Crossing the Stage

At the appropriate time, graduates will be instructed by staff to proceed to the stage ramp on the right, followed in order by remaining rows. Students should have their GradPasses ready to scan and hood in hand upon reaching the stage ramp. Volunteers will be at the entrance of the stage to direct students as to where to get hooded, where to shake President Grigsby's hand, and where to receive their diploma cover. The photographer will capture these moments with a picture.

Some students will receive specific awards, which are listed in the program. At the appropriate time, those students will be asked to form a line on the right-hand ramp in the order that names appear in the program. As each award recipient's name is called, the recipient will cross the platform to receive the award from President Grigsby, and then return to the same seat and immediately sit down. All graduates who have received prizes and awards earlier in the term will then be asked to stand and be recognized in place.

Recessional

The departure from John Makuvek Field will be led by the Faculty Marshals, the Presidential Party, the Faculty, and then the graduates. We recommend you have a prearranged meeting location with your guests.

Reception

There will be a reception with light refreshments on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex (PPHAC) patio or in the event of inclement weather, in the PPHAC Atrium.

The ceremony will be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend. This video can be found at moravian.edu/2024-livestream.

The University has arranged for a professional photographer to take pictures of graduates receiving their diplomas. These will be shared with the graduates after the ceremony.

In order to be respectful to all graduates, other professional photographers are not permitted.

Live-streaming video of the event will be captioned. Guests watching the video in the provided, on-campus locations or live streaming at home will see the text displayed. A separate text-only website will also be available for use during the event and can be found on this webpage during the ceremony: /commencement-captions.

A professional videographer will record the entire Commencement ceremony and it will be available to view and download free of charge approximately one month after the ceremony

Commencement will be held on campus on Saturday, May 3 regardless of the weather. Unless there is weather that threatens personal safety, the commencement ceremony generally continues outside. Please come prepared for the weather (umbrella, raincoat, hat, sunscreen, etc).
