For students: First-Year Writing Frequently Asked Questions

What is First-Year Writing ?

É«ÖÐÉ«'s First-Year Writing (FYW) program is your introduction to college-level reading, research, and writing as well as the campus services that can and will aid you in your success. The FYW program offers different pathways for students to satisfy the university’s F1 writing requirement. All of these pathways share the same set of learning goals but reach them in different ways.

  • The majority of first-time first-year students place into LinC 101: First-Year Writing Seminar.
  • Transfer students typically take LinC 102: Writing Seminar.
  • Students who would benefit from two semesters of coursework focusing on college-level reading, research, and writing may be guided to/decide to take a two semester course sequence of Writing 101: College Reading and Writing and LinC 102: Writing Seminar OR the two semester course sequence of Writing 105: College Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners I and Writing 106: College Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners II.

Do I have to take First-Year Writing?

Yes, First-Year Writing (FYW) is a one or two semester requirement for all incoming first-year students. A trained upperclass Writing Fellow will also help guide you throughout FYW.

When will I find out what First-Year Writing Seminar course topics are being offered in the Fall?

Check out the First-Year Writing Course Topics page. More information will be provided before summer registration.

English is not my native language. Is there a particular class I should register for?

Non-native English speakers may be placed into a two-semester course sequence—Writing 105: College Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners I and Writing 106: College Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners II.

What if I feel like I've been placed into the wrong FYW course?

Throughout August and up until the end of the second week of classes, you can set up a meeting with Dr. Crystal Fodrey, Director of Writing, to discuss your writing course placement. This discussion could result in you being moved from, for example, Writing 105 to Writing 101 or LinC 101 or from LinC 101 to Writing 105 or Writing 101. If you are registered for one section of LinC 101 and want to move to another one with open seats, you can do that through AMOS during the first week of classes without discussing with Dr. Fodrey.

Where can I find the summer reading and writing assignments for FYW?

The summer reading and writing assignments will be shared with you the first week of August. Be sure to check your É«ÖÐÉ« email account at least once each day to stay up to date with communication from your advising team and first-year writing instructor.
