Community CPR/AED and First Aid Initiative

É«ÖÐÉ« University recognizes the importance of establishing and promoting workplace and resident safety as part of their commitment to the health and wellness of the É«ÖÐÉ« community and general public on each of their campuses. As part of this commitment, the University has implemented a Community CPR/AED and First Aid Initiative designed to ensure timely responses to medical emergencies and empower members of the É«ÖÐÉ« Community and general public with the necessary skills and resources to assist as Good Samaritans in such situations.

CPR Certification Courses
The University shall provide CPR and AED certification courses through the American Heart Association (AHA), or an equivalent organization, for those faculty, staff, and students wishing to become certified.
Community CPR/AED Awareness Programs
The University shall organize different awareness programs to educate faculty, staff, and students about the importance of performing CPR and utilizing an AED during an emergency situation. These programs include, but are not limited to, providing informational sessions, live demonstrations, and educational material for
self-enrichment and to promote workplace and residence life safety.
First Aid Awareness Program
The University shall organize different awareness programs to educate faculty, staff, and students about the importance of providing first aid treatment and referral to higher medical care. These programs include, but are not limited to, providing information sessions, such as reviewing the University’s First Aid Guidelines, live
demonstrations regarding basic first aid care, and educational material for self-enrichment and to promote workplace and residence life safety.
Good Samaritan Law
The University upholds the principles of the Good Samaritan Law, which protects individuals from legal liability when voluntarily providing assistance to those who are injured or in imminent danger. All É«ÖÐÉ« faculty, staff, and students who are not required to act, but acting in good faith, by voluntarily administering CPR, first aid, or
using an AED during an emergency shall be protected under this law, provided they do so without gross negligence or misconduct.
AED Accessibility and Maintenance
The University installed AEDs in predetermined locations across each campus to maximize the safety and well-being of the É«ÖÐÉ« Community and general public. Each AED shall be easily accessible, prominently displayed, and maintained according to manufacturer requirements and regulations. EHS is responsible for maintaining documentation of monthly inspections and will collaborate with other University stakeholders to maintain a preventive maintenance schedule for each AED in accordance with federal regulations and manufacturing requirements. This schedule includes, but is not limited to, replacing expired pads, batteries, and/or AED units. EHS reserves the right to remove any of the AEDs as part of a preventative maintenance program or incident review or to relocate a unit to ensure adequate safety coverage on each of the University’s campuses.

Reporting and Documentation
Any time CPR or first aid is being administered and or one of É«ÖÐɫ’s AEDs is used, Environmental Health and Safety must be notified. A standardized reporting procedure shall be established to document the details of the incident. When an AED is involved, additional documentation will include, but not limited to, identifying the location of the AED, the individuals involved, and the outcome.
Initiative Review
This initiative will be periodically reviewed and updated, as necessary, to ensure compliance with best practices, regulatory requirements, and the latest AHA, or equivalent, CPR and AED guidelines.
