Areas of Research and Expertise:

Dr. Boyer's primary research examines the antecedents and consequences of social identity threat and intergroup competition in the workplace. Her current projects investigate 1) the effects of stereotype threat on women's leadership performance and motivation, and 2) the effects of occupational identity threat on service employees' performance and social media misconduct. She utilizes experiments, surveys, qualitative interviews, and social media data to understand the triggers of identity threat, employees' cognitive and emotional responses to threat, and their coping strategies. Her goal is to develop practical recommendations for improving intergroup relations and employee wellbeing.

A second stream of research focuses on leader identity and development. Dr. Boyer is interested in how people come to see themselves as leaders and how they develop their power, influence, and effectiveness.
