Minors

The following minors are available only for non-art majors.

I) Art Minor

The minor in art consists of ART 113 (Art History Survey: Caves to Cathedrals), ART 170 (Drawing I), and three additional courses selected with the approval of the advisor. Two of the three courses must be at the 200 level or above. A student may choose courses that emphasize studio art, graphic design, or art history and criticism. (It is not possible to minor in art education.)

Core courses:

  • ART 113, Art History Survey: Caves to Cathedrals
  • ART 170, Drawing I

Additional Courses:

  • Three courses selected with adviser’s approval
  • Two of these additional three courses must be at the 200 level or above.

II) Art History and Criticism Minor

The art history and criticism minor requires five courses.

  1. ART 113, Art History Survey: Caves to Cathedrals
  2. ART 114, Art History Survey: Renaissance to Abstraction
  3. ART 218, Art of Renaissance
    Prerequisite ART 113, 114 or permission of instructor
  4.  ART 229, Modern Art – Writing-Intensive
    Prerequisite ART 113, 114 or permission of instructor
  5. Fifth course for the minor can be selected from the following:
    • ART 226, Art of the Nineteenth Century
    • ART 212, Artists as Activists (LinC U2)
    • ART 220, History of Photography
    • ART 222, African Art (LinC M5)
    • Special Topics in Art History (i.e., Modern and Contemporary Design, Prehistoric Art)
    • Independent Study in Art History – previous independent studies have included American Art, Architecture History
    • Internship at a regional museum or arts organization – past internships have included ArtsQuest, Kemerer Museum, Allentown Art Museum, Baum School of Art, and other arts organizations
    • Art History courses at LVAIC or other institutions (with approval of the minor adviser):
      • Lehigh: Museum Studies, Architecture History
      • Lafayette: wide variety of courses including Asian Art, Ancient Art, Byzantine Art, African-American Art
      • Cedar Crest: Gender and Art, Contemporary Art

III) Graphic and Interactive Design Minor

The graphic and interactive design minor requires five courses.

  1. ART 142, Visual Foundations
  2. ART 131, Introduction to Graphic Design
  3. ART 230, Typography and Information Design
    Prerequisite ART 131
  4. ART 231, Publication Design
    Prerequisite ART 131
  5. Fifth course for the minor can be selected from the following:
    • ART 268, Digital Photography
      Prerequisite ART 131, MAC experience or workshop
    • ART 254, Digital Video
      Prerequisite ART 131, MAC experience or workshop
    • ART 147: Screen Printing
    • ART 346, Interactive Design
    • ART 331, Graphic and Interactive Design Practice
      Prerequisite ART 231 or permission of instructor
    • ART 374, Portfolio Seminar
      Prerequisite ART 231 or permission of instructor

IV) Photography/Media Minor

This program is designed as a minor for students outside the art department with an interest in photography, digital imaging, media arts, or other aspects of the visual arts.

Five courses are required to complete the photography/media minor.

  • ART 167, Black & White Photography 1
  • ART 268, Digital Photography
  • One of the following art history courses:
    ART 220, History of Photography
    ART 114, Art History Survey: Renaissance to Abstraction
    ART 229, Modern Art (Writing-Intensive)
  • The fourth and fifth courses for the minor can be selected from the following:
    ART 254, Digital Video
    ART 265, Alternative Photo Processes
    ART 267, Black & White Photography 2
    ART 367, Black & White Photography 3
