MU SPOTLIGHT 20/20
Belinda Waller-Peterson
What is your role at the University and what is something many may not know about the work you do?
I teach courses in African American literature and Literature and Medicine. I am also a registered nurse so I bring that experience along with my love of literature to my classroom spaces.
My favorite spot on campus is…
My office...it's my home away from home filled with some of the books, images and scents that I love. It's also the place where I can meet with my students and talk/laugh (loudly) with my colleagues.
What’s your favorite É«ÖÐÉ« tradition?
Vespers...the community as a whole is excited to participate and I get to see my students doing something they love.
One thing that many of my colleagues don’t know about me outside of É«ÖÐÉ« University is…
I am a marathoner...running is an important part of my life and my commitment to self-care.
My typical weekend goes something like this:
Breakfast with my family followed by binge watching something on Netflix and church on Sunday.
Who is your hero? Why?
Shirley Chisholm is Black girl magic personified. She was the first African American and woman to run for president of the United states in 1972. Her example encourages me to strive towards excellence.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
To do what I love.
What's your favorite ice cream flavor? Why?
Mint chocolate chip. It was my favorite as a child.
I can never resist a good _______.
book, especially if it's written by Toni Morrison!
What makes you happy?
Spending time with my family.
If there was a movie produced about your life, who would play you and why?
Tracee Ellis Ross. She's an incredible actress, versatile, tall and I love her style!
