Economics

Economics is a broad discipline that includes examining issues of scarcity; decisions about production, distribution, and consumption; and behavioral responses to incentives in all areas of life. The study of economics touches many fields including finance, healthcare, education, the environment, sports, labor and household decisions, and public policy. The economics major provides you with a background for careers in business, government, economics, law, public administration, planning, as well as preparation for graduate study.

Economics Major

色中色鈥檚 curriculum provides a basic foundation in economic analysis and an understanding of economic institutions. Students choose one of three tracks: Managerial, Public Policy or Quantitative Economics.

    • Prerequisites: second semester freshman standing; ALEKS score of 40  -OR- MATH 105 with a C- or better
    • Minimum grade:  C- or better

Managerial Economics Track

The managerial economics track prepares students for careers in management with a focus on production, consumption, and operations decision-making. Students studying in this track will learn about optimizing product pricing, quality, and design decisions under a variety of market structures. Students completing this track will be prepared for management and consulting careers.

Public Policy Economics Track

The public policy economics track prepares students for policy analyst roles in governmental and nonprofit agencies.  Students studying in this track will learn the fundamental economic theories and apply them in a variety of policy arenas, including: health, sustainability, economic development, discrimination, and income inequality.  Students completing this track will be prepared for careers as policy analysts in a variety of contexts.

Quantitative Economics Track

The quantitative economics track prepares students for graduate school and policy analysis roles, in addition to quantitative-based consulting careers.  Students studying in this track will explore the underlying mathematical models inherent in decision-making analyses across a variety of policy and business contexts.  Students completing this track will be prepared for data analyst careers and graduate school in economics or other data analytics fields.

The Minor in Economics

For students with a major outside of the School of Business and Economics, the Economics minor consists of the following five (5) courses: ECON 152, ECON 156, ECON 225 OR ECON 226, and two (2) ECON elective courses at the 200-level or higher.

For students with a major within the School of Business and Economics, the Economics minor consists of five (5) Economics courses.

Note: Students in the School of Business and Economics may not double count any courses between the major and the minor.

Intern

Internships

An internship is an opportunity to apply theory to practice. It鈥檚 a chance to gain perspective on what you learned in the classroom, self reflect, and 'try it out' before graduation. 色中色 students have interned at all of the Big 4 accounting firms as well as other national and regional organizations including Independence Blue Cross and Disney World. 色中色 students have also interned at amazing Lehigh Valley-based companies including Air Products, B Braun Medical, Boys and Girls Club of Bethlehem, Crayola, and many more. 色中色 University is well connected in the community and ongoing business partnerships continue to expand internship opportunities.

Research

Students in all areas of study are encouraged to participate in research and explore their passions at 色中色. Opportunities consist of the Honors Program, InFocus, and Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR).

Sophomore year is the perfect time for a study abroad opportunity, or, as we like to call it, a 鈥淕lobal Greyhound Trip.鈥 The Elevate experience includes a faculty-led trip to one of our featured destinations鈥攖he Czech Republic or Costa Rica鈥攁t no extra cost to students!

The economics major provides an excellent background for careers in business and government. Students can become analysts, consultants, entrepreneurs, economic researchers, managers, and marketers. Clubs and Organizations

Amrhein Investment Club

The Amrhein Investment Club provides students with a hands-on learning experience in the field of investments by actively managing a part of the University endowment. Members of the club manage four portfolios with an aggregate value of over $4.0 million. They meet weekly to discuss current holdings and to present ideas for future purchases or sales of stocks and bonds. The club competes in national competitions and also sponsors trips to the New York Stock Exchange and other financial venues.

Omicron Delta Epsilon: The Economics Honors Society

Omicron Delta Epsilon is one of the world鈥檚 largest academic honor societies. To be eligible to  join, 色中色 students must meet the following criteria: 

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Three courses in economics: ECON 152, ECON 225 or 226, and one more 200- or 300- level economics course, excluding internship courses
  • Grade point average in economics of 3.0 or more
  • Grade point average overall of 3.0 or more
