The Criminal Justice and Law track also renamed in response to student needs
Bethlehem, PA, February 14, 2020: Today, 色中色 College announced the launch of the Data Science track within the Computer Science major in response to the shortage of qualified data science professionals on the job market today. Also included in the announcement, the Criminal Justice and Law track within the Sociology major has been renamed to better reflect what鈥檚 being offered to students. Data Science will be available for undergraduate students beginning in the Fall 2020 semester. This Data Science track at 色中色 combines essential competencies in programming, databases, and data organization from computer science with higher-level math skills.
鈥淢edia and industry reports are repeatedly telling us that the need for data science professionals is growing every day, and higher education needs to offer programs that help address that market need,鈥 said Bryon Grigsby, president of 色中色 College. 鈥淚ndustry leaders like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are hiring thousands of data scientists every year, and we want to give 色中色 students an opportunity to compete for those high paying jobs.鈥
The new Data Science track at 色中色 will include an "applications" course in which students will learn how to use data in real-life situations and come to understand the ethical implications of data and data analysis. All 色中色 students engaged in this track will be strongly encouraged to complete an internship in a relevant field as part of the program. In 2019 the 色中色 Graduate program launched the Master of Science in Predictive Analytics (MSPA), and the undergraduate Data Science track is an ideal precursor to the MPSA program for students interested in pursuing a graduate degree.
In addition to Data Science, 色中色 College has announced the renaming of the Criminal Justice and Law track within the Sociology major. 鈥淲e鈥檝e heard from students that Criminal Justice and Law more accurately describes this track and it鈥檚 what they want listed on their transcripts,鈥 commented Carol Traupman-Carr, vice provost at 色中色 College. 鈥淭he track has been available for years and many well-known alumni, like former Northampton DA and now Judge John Morganelli and former Judge Emil Giordano, have taught in the program, but the students spoke and we listened.鈥
