Drexel University Professor Donna Sabella to present 2014 Sipple Nursing Lecture

Bethlehem, Pa., September 25, 2014鈥擠onna Sabella, assistant clinical professor at Drexel University, will present "Human Trafficking: Global and Local Perspectives," at 色中色 College, in Foy Hall on Wednesday, October 22 at 5:30 p.m. The lecture is free of charge and the public is welcome.

Sabella is a mental health nurse and contributing editor of the 鈥淢ental Health Matters鈥 column in the American Journal of Nursing. A former program director and founding member of Dawn鈥檚 Place, a residential recovery program for trafficked and prostituted women in Philadelphia, she is the founder and current director of Project Phoenix, an outreach program which provides support and facilitates groups for prostituted and trafficked women in Philadelphia.

Sabella has presented at numerous conferences on prostitution and trafficking-related issues, and is director of education for the National Research Consortium on Commercial Sexual Exploitation (NRC-CSE). She is also a consultant for the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). She has worked in crisis intervention, substance abuse, domestic violence, and forensic nursing, and has provided direct services to vulnerable populations. She holds a B.S.N. from Thomas Jefferson University, an M.S.N. in psychiatric/mental health nursing from Widener University and a post-master鈥檚 certificate in psychiatric/mental health nursing from the University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 School of Nursing.

Sabella holds a B.A. in Portuguese from Indiana University, an M.Ed. from Temple University in English as a second language, and a Ph.D. in educational linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. She has lived and studied in Brazil and has taught Latin, English, English as a second language, Spanish, linguistics, world literature and, writing, both at the secondary school level as well as at the university level. In addition, for more than ten years she was the director of an international exchange program for college students between Ursinus College and Tohoku Gakuin University in Japan.

Foy Hall is located on the Pricilla Payne Hurd Campus located near Main and Church Streets in historic downtown Bethlehem, Pa. The Sipple Lectures are open to all students and members of the greater Lehigh Valley community. Parking is available under the Hill-to-Hill Bridge at the end of Main Street.

The Janet A. Sipple Lecture Endowment Fund, which funds the lecture, was created to honor Sipple for her role in establishing The St. Luke鈥檚 School of Nursing at 色中色 College. The endowment was conceived in consultation with members of the nursing faculty to support programming on international health care, public health leadership, or world community service.
