The Unauthorized Autobiography of Bethlehem Pennsylvania

Major/minor: Major in Sociology, Minor in Peace and Justice Studies
Hometown: Doylestown, Pennsylvania
Project mentors: Dr. Daniel Jasper and Dr. Kelly Denton Borhaug

Project Details:

  1. Briefly describe your SOAR project.
This project was the study of Bethlehem's socioeconomic history as a way to demonstrate how different economic systems work in small scale democracies. I used Memoirs found in the É«ÖÐÉ« archives, the steelworkers' archives and other various resources as primary sources to provide a more personal look into Bethlehem's socioeconomic history.

  2. What motivated you to participate in SOAR?
I was intrigued by Bethlehem's History, and I believed from the start that Bethlehem was an important part of American history.

  3. What are the results of your work on this project?
An in-depth analysis proved that the pursuit of democracy does not coincide with American Capitalism; in fact, the two seem to work against one another.

  4. What are your personal takeaways from the project? And do you plan to continue work on this project after SOAR?
I took away a summer full of knowledge. I learned so much about America by researching Bethlehem's history, and I plan to continue my writing in this field.
